Nanowrimo 2006: Day 1

So, today I began writing, really writing, for the first time in months. I sat down with a plan and a dream, and started to type. I was able to get the entire first chapter drafted and down before I turned in for the night. I did a couple of things to help me write better, too.

I've written the first two chapters of this book before, but the old versions do not resemble the current writings whatsoever. It was really fun getting to write for a few hours, taking a nap, then writing for a few more hours.

I got two of my friends, Jon Hickerson and Sarah Drapkin, participating in Nanowrimo as well, and I like the idea of having some people to run story ideas to. Elizabeth is also a great help when it comes to figuring out if my novel is making sense.

I've been having some ergonomics problems with my desk setup, since it is just a crappy school-provided desk. I took an old box of Magic cards and placed it under my monitor, raising it up about four inches off of the desk. The monitor is right at eye-level now, so it's really easy to see.

I had initially planned on using Google Docs to host and manage my novel, so I would always have access to it, wherever I went, but that whole plan didn't really pan out. I had too many problems with the font choices as well as conversion issues, but I am keeping my outline on-line.

Other than that, nothing really revolutionary happened today. With 29 days left to write a 50,000 word novel, I am both excited and worried. I'm hoping that I will finish the book, but even if I don't, I will still learn a lot from this process.
